Erawan Waterfalls

Posted on

As part of our pre-booked thing for Kancharburi, we visited Erawan National Park to explore the seven step waterfall.

We started off walking and came to the first one within about ten minutes but it was swamped with children on school trips. Yuk.

We quickly moved onto the next one which was also far too busy with tourists and children. And when I say tourists, I mean the ones who take a million photos of everything, wear socks and sandals and have no self awareness. Clearly nothing like us.

Some really nice Aussie girls who we met in our floating house told us to just keep on hiking up to the fifth waterfall as it’s a lot quieter. So that’s what we did.

It was like a million degrees, and we were walking up a steep hill on a path which was covered in branches and rocks which made it ever harder to walk on. Every part of our bodies was dripping in sweat and all we wanted to do was jump into the waterfall but we pushed on and made it to Waterfall Number Five.

It was hear I decided to stop as I was just too hot. Hiking up a hill in the midday heat really isn’t good for an English rose like me.

Bie and Nineham decided they wanted to go up to seven as they thought they should because they were there or something silly like that, so on they went. I walked all the way back down to Waterfall Number Four which I swear took about five hours.

When I got there, there was only about five other people there so I just sat on a rock and cooled down as I was literally the colour of a lobster. It was not attractive.

I went to get into the water but then I saw all the fishys and freaked out a little bit, I couldn’t bring myself to actually get in. Luckily a really nice English couple were there and encouraged me to do it, she basically had to hold my hand into the water….she didn’t really do that but she was very supportive.

I put my legs into the water and in about 10 seconds I had hundreds of fish all around me who were nibbling on my fat legs. It didn’t hurt particularly, it just felt really strange. I tried to get used to it but when you look down and can’t see anything but fish trying to eat you, it’s hard not to panic.

The only thing I could do was go further in to the deep but where the fish don’t like to go for some reason. Off I doggy paddled as fast as I could, but then realised I couldn’t put my feet down as I didn’t know what was on the bottom, so I just had to keep on swimming in circles. I didn’t care that I looked silly.

I got out and sat on the side to dry off when the two other goons appeared. They were very red and sweaty and just wanted to get into the water. We had to walk all the way back down to the bottom to meet for lunch at 12.30.

When we got there we went into the building our driver had pointed at earlier and saw there was a buffet there which everyone was helping themselves too. We naturally presumed this was for us as well so helped ourselves. We had chicken, potatoes (first potato since England), fish, noodles, rice, pineapple, melon…..the works!

We then found out we were not supposed to have eaten any of it and that all we were supposed to be having was Pad Thai. Oops.

Our driver had a soft spot for us which meant we got away with eating like kings at lunch time for free, and then got the Pad Thai in a takeaway box which we took back on the coach with us. It was brilliant. We should steal other peoples buffets more often!

The next part of our day was travelling to a place called Attaya which meant sitting on another bus and travelling for what was nearly 7 and a half hours, even though it should have taken us no more than three hours. But that’s the thai way, they take their sweet ass time about everything.
